Hadoa inaudita

Formerly placed within the Genus Tibicen like many species of annual cicadas here in North America, this species was recently separated and put into Genus Hadoa.
This particular cicada is orange-black and has a fairly conspicuous pruinose (white waxy power) spot on sides of the abdomen. It often likes to call from coniferous trees, such as junipers. One interesting aspect about the Hadoa inaudita is that it appears to prefer calling in an inverted position with its head pointing downwards. The continuous, moderately high-pitched call is somewhat reminiscent of N. canicularis, N. davisi or N. auriferus.
There is not much information on the range of this particular species. However, it has been at least found in Colorado and New Mexico (perhaps Northern Mexico and parts of Texas). The general taxonomy of many of these species is muddled and, despite changes in nomenclature and classification, precision on species placement is still questionable.
